Money withdrawn from my bank account

My wife has had a sum of money withdrawn from her bank account today - it says the payment was taken from Paypal Fuzhicheng.
She has not made any purchases, so checked her PayPal account to find no mention of this withdrawal.

Is it possible for somebody to create a new PayPal account using her bank details? And how can we go about getting this resolved and the monies refunded?

Any help would be gratefully received as we are really struggling at the moment and cannot afford any sum of money being stolen from us!

Hello @swyftie

Welcome to the PayPal Community! I'm sorry to hear your wife has experienced some unrecognized activity on her account. Normally, if you see the transaction on your PayPal account, we would recommend opening a case in our Resolution Center. However, since there's no transaction to open a case on, we would recommend reaching out the bank to see what options are available.

You may also want to ask the bank if the transaction was completed with the card number or account / routing number. Depending on which one it was, you may want to request a new card or a new account number.

Best wishes,

Thank you, I have an update.

My wife spoke with her bank.

It turns out the transaction was completed using my wife's card details through a Russian PayPal account.

Her card has been canceled and she will hopefully get the full amount back soon, although she may need to speak with the police first as the bank is reporting this to them.

I thought that Russian accounts were frozen in response to the current war in progress so a little confused about that part.

@swyftie, Thanks for the update! I'm sorry to hear the card info was compromised somehow. I'm glad to hear your bank is able to guide you through to a resolution though! That's great news.

There currently is still a restriction for users in Russia, so that's definitely an unknown there.

Either way, my apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. Best wishes on future PayPal transactions!

Hi. We have the exact same issue. Transactions appearing on our back account but not on the PayPal account. The bank account was only a few days old. We have written to the bank. It may well be the same issue and the debit cards are already compromised and will need to be re-issued. I wonder how many people this happens to and what PayPal are doing to stop it, if anything? It doesn't seem right, how people can people take from your bank account in the name of PayPal without any transaction appearing on the PayPal account.

Hello @Jo-jo67,

Welcome to our community help forum and thanks for posting here!

I do understand your concern about the unauthorized transactions in your bank account. If you do not recognize any of the transactions and they are not showing up on the PayPal account, it's possible that your financial information is stolen. I would suggest you to report these transactions with your bank. From there, the bank will communicate with us further so we can find and report the transactions for further investigation.

Best wishes!

Bindu
