Is there any come back if selling a car via PayPal

Hello there, I am just posting a quick question. I have a potential buyer for my car on Autotrader and he will be importing the car from UK to Ireland. However, he wants to pay via PayPal and he is happy to arrange collection only after the money has cleared I am concerned about the situation where he may try and recall the money for a refund if there is something he is unhappy with. I don’t trust PayPal in this situation and I could be asked to refund a huge amount of money without any real evidence that there is an issue or even getting my car back because it would be overseas. I have read that I could ask him to put via Friends and Family and then money could not be recalled back. Is this right? Any advice on selling a car and using PayPal as a payment method is most welcome…I am just concerned I would be asked to refund if there happened to be something not to the buyers liking.

1. Firstly there is no paypal seller protection for motor vehicles.

2. If you ask him to pay using friends/family its against paypal rules and may lead to an account limitation, secondly if he filed for an unauthorised transaction or a chargeback via his card issuer then you may well lose as there is no seller protection for that and they can still file with their card issuer just not open a paypal dispute.

3. Lastly may well be this SCAM............

SCAM.

They encourage you to accept a direct Paypal payment.
No funds or activity of the transaction shows in your Paypal account and any emails may go into your junk/spam folders.

They don't quibble on cost and may also say they can't view the item as they are disabled or working abroad or sending as a gift to a family member but they will arrange a shipping agent or courier to collect it.

You will get/got a "fake" email that looks as though it is from paypal.....it isn't because they don't have a Paypal account and have no intention of paying you.
It will say the buyer has paid ...you won't have been paid.

The fake paypal email will tell you that the buyer has paid for the item + shipping costs but you must send those shipping costs to the courier/ shipping agent via another payment processor than Paypal or by providing some vouchers or tokens before the funds are released to you.
They are not interested in the car, they just want that couriers/shipping funds and you will never see money in your paypal balance.

Paypal NEVER tell you to do anything before the payment is shows in your paypal account.
Paypal NEVER expect you to use a rival money transfer service eg Moneygram, Western Union, Bank Transfer or any sort of gift token or voucher.
There is no seller protection on paypal for any type of motor vehicle or item that is collected by the buyer.

Delete any emails and ignore the scammers.

Kudos / Solution appreciated.

Hello and thank you for the reply! I have found this most useful and will not use PayPal for the car transaction. May well be a scam!

I have this with an exercise bike too.  No protection as it needs to be collected. Its very heavy so not sure if courier would be an option but then it could be a scam with the address 🥴😵
