Got a "Confirmation" payment email from an @ gmail . com email, that's a scam right?

I haven't made payment requests on PayPal before, but I wanted to sell something on FB and I was working with someone on FB to sell an item. They had me send a request payment to an email address. I sent it to the provided email address on my PayPal account and they said that they made the payment and to check my spam box for it.

I see an email saying that I've received a payment, but I'm kind of suspicious about it. The email was sent from an <[Removed]> email which doesn't seem right. This is a scam, right? I shouldn't be receiving an email from paypal with an @ gmail . com. Again, first time using this method of receiving payment for something, but this doesn't seem right. I cancelled the request, but wanted to confirm my sanity that this wasn't legitimate.

SCAM.

They ask for your payment request or invoice so that they then have your paypal email address so that they can send those fake paypal emails. They tell you to check your spam folder as they are sending hundreds of these fake emails at a time and so your server would process them as spam / spoof.

Nothing in your paypal balance= you have not been paid. Even if pending or on hold the funds would still show in your paypal account and activity.
