If I buy something using Paypal secondhand on gumtree interstate and it is posted to me, do I have buyer protection?

As long as you used the goods/services option to pay OR paid a money request or invoice then yes.

But paypal buyer protection is not a 100% coverall so your best bet is to read up on it in paypals user agreement so you can risk assess your transactions.
