IPN issue where return transaction info not sent on time

I have the IPN working fine most of the time but every week i have an issue where a number of customers ring to say their code (which is sent after i get IPN) did not arrive. This is because the ipn is not coming quickly.

Anyone any ideas on a way to fix this issue as I really need the ipn to arrive as soon as the transaction has happened.
