why do we have to pay taxes on selling our items on ebay? no different then having a rummage sale
If you sell here and there occasionally, you may not have to but if you do it long term and consistently as part of your income or misc income then yes, you will need to pay taxes on it. It's the system trying to bring the real world to the virtual world.
