If you funded the original payment from your bank account or paypal or paypal balance and not a debit or credit card then it would go back to your paypal balance.
HOWEVER if you bought anything and used paypal to pay for it around that time paypal would have used those funds in your balance rather than your normal funding source.
So go back over the last few transactions about a month ago and see if one or more of them were funded not from your bank but from your paypal balance.
