Pay in 4 cancelled purchase help

I was working my way though a checkout on an online store, I had selected and approved Pay in 4, but then realised the website had added an extra charge for something. I cancelled the transaction to take the charge off and PayPal has got my first payment on hold for a transaction I never made.

I see you're worried about payment hold for a canceled transaction. When you initiate a payment through PayPal, the amount will be on hold temporarily in your PayPal and bank accounts until merchant completes or accepts the order. Since the payment wasn't completed, any pending charges will get voided in few days. I recommend you to wait for few more days to see the release of the payment in your account.
