Does cancelling a partially paid invoice buyer-side automatically trigger a refund?

I sent an invoice that has been partially paid by the client. It was to be paid in two parts, but covid happened, the project was put on hiatus, and now that it's back on track, the client readjusted their budget for the second part of the payment, so the invoice is no longer relevant.
I have no option to cancel it on my end, I assume it's because it's partially paid. But the client says they have a cancel invoice button.
Neither of us know whether cancelling a partially paid invoice buyer-side will trigger a refund of what they already paid. Neither of us want that to happen, either.
Can they safely cancel the invoice on their side? Or will that automatically trigger a refund of what has already been paid?
Thank you for your time.
