how to accept a credit card payment

Hello - I need to be able to accept payment via a credit card, but it isn't clear how to do so.  I think I generate an invoice, and the client adds its credit card information to the invoice (even though it doesn't have a place for it); then PayPal processes it somehow and moves the money to me?  I need a step by step that I can explain to my client.  Thank you!!!
