Please will you help me to understand my ‘Pay in 3’ issue?

Hello, So I have a ‘Pay in 3’ plan with a company and have already paid the first instalment of the plan. However, I have since sent the item back and the company has issued me with a refund straight to my bank account using the card details I gave them. (They did not issue the refund through PayPal.) I have called PayPal and asked them to cancel the ‘Pay in 3’ plan, but they have said that since they have already paid the company in full on my behalf, I have to let the payment plan run on, and pay it in full. I do not understand how I do not lose money from having to keep paying the plan. The girl I spoke to at PayPal tried her best to explain it to me, but I am afraid I am slow to understand. Do I lose money or not?

You have basically had a 'refund' BEFORE you have paid as you have only paid x1 payment.

So you need to pay the other 2 payments which you still owe.
