Why does paypal want to withdraw money from my account? I have no unpaid purchases and no direct debit instructions.

You can't pay with paypal from a bank account without a direct debit set up on your online banking list of mandates.
However bank transfers are never instant, paypal credits the seller in advance and marks the transaction as complete (which is why you have no unpaid transactions).
HOWEVER paypal then take the wait for your bank transfer to process through to them to pay them back again, if that bank transfer fails then that is the message that you get and normally your paypal balance will show a minus.
If its not that then check.......
if you had a subscription set up...
Click on the profile tab (icon next to log out) > Click on payments third option along on the thick blue band top of page > "manage pre-approved payments''.
