Payments may be subject to PayPal holds but you should still see a record of payment when you log on and the amount would be showing in your PayPal Pending balance and the transaction is marked "On Hold" and there would be an account alert when you log on to your PayPal account.
Always check your PayPal account, don't just believe emails.
PayPal payment emails and account activity work in conjunction together, they are not independent of each other. Don't just assume that you get a message from PayPal it means the money is there as messages/emails can be fakes/spoofed.
