I recently requested a refund and the seller immediately provided it. However, PayPal sent the money to a non existent creditar card (an old one) despite the fact the new credit card details were already updated in my account.

Refunds automatically go back to the card used to fund the purchase initially, paypal do not 'send' it anywhere.
If both old and new cards belong / ed to the same ACCOUNT then the refund should go through ok.
If that account has been closed then it should bounce back to your paypal balance, allow 30 days and if no show contact customer services for a trace.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.
