Paypal Debit card funding

I added an american express gift card to my paypal account. If I use my Paypaldebit card to make a purchase, will it use my gift card as the funding source if my paypal balance can’t cover the purchase?

Unfortunately, this isn't possible.

PayPal only allows the PayPal Business debit card to set credit cards as a backup funding option in case of a zero balance, and even then, only PayPal branded credit cards and checking accounts are able to be set as a backup funding source.
