Payment Processed as Echeque?

I recently paid for something that was time-sensitive (I need it soon-ish) and realized that the payment had gone through as an echeque and would not clear for several days. I cancelled it and went to try again, thinking I had **bleep** up somehow, but there was no option OTHER than the echeque option. Why could this be? I have  paid with my bank account countless times and never had this problem before.
