Need a refund but paypal and the merchant dont seem to help

I made a purchase but then before the merchant sent out the goods we cancelled the transaction. Problem is that the payment was an echeck and it is showing as pending in my paypal account. The money has been taken from my bank account and i need a refund. Trying to get hold of someone from paypal to discuss this is absolutely ridiculous, they never answer and trying to get an email sent to them is so stupid, the help system is pathetic. The merchant says they have cancelled it but it is not showing up as cancelled so they saying they not had the money.
At a loss on what to do because someone has my money.

Well paypal can't do anything about giving you a refund until they have received the money from your bank account first.
Once its processed through to paypal then IF the merchant has issued a refund it will be returned to your bank account.
Advice is voluntary.
