Money taken from my accounts

So a friend of mine proceeded to an online purchase of an item for about 500 euros. Due to a typo issue, the company cancelled the payment and the money was instantly returned to his PayPal account. After trying to re-order the item, PayPal came up with an issue, concerning the type of the debit card connected to my friend's PayPal's account (which is absurd since the initial payment was completed without any issues) so he tried to proceed to the payment, instantly with his debit card.

Again, there was an issue that had to do with the company itself and the payment was not accepted.

After that point, both balances (bank-PayPal) have a total of 0 euros. Note down, that the last activity recorded is PayPal's refund.

Where did the money go? What are we supposed to do from now on?

If you funded the original Paypal payment to the seller with a card then it won't go back to your paypal balance.

Once marked as completed it will automatically go back to your card. Paypal say allow 30 days but I have never waited longer than a week for mine, however that depends a lot on what country you are in.
