Is this a legit payment / sale?

My son is trying to sell a NERF gun ebay.  The buyer has a good rating and offered to pay for the gun, but also asked my son to buy a gift card for 300 and they would send payment for the gun, gift card, time and energy and shipping.  Seems like too good to be true.  I received an email from online services approved indicating I need to send a picture of the gift card code in order to get the payment released.  Real or phishing?

SCAM.

I bet that ebay account has been hacked and they are using another persons account, that is generally how the scammers work.

They do NOT have paypal accounts.

So they send you FAKE paypal emails saying that they have paid but you have send the gift card first...rubbish, that is not how paypal works.

No funds in your paypal balance means you have not been paid.
