Help regarding 'pre-authorisation'

I recently made a purchase expecting the usual 2-stage authentication text message. I was surprised that it went through without any check. On looking on my account it was entered as 'pre-authorised - this was news to me as I had not done anything to agree to this. This time it did not matter but what had I done to pre-authorise the purchase and how can I stop it happening again?
