Does the customer pay more than what is listed?

We have a contract with someone and they want to pay by paypal. I know the paypal fee is currently 2.9% from what I've read.

Say the contract is for $1,000.00. Will the customer pay $1,029.00 and we receive $1,000.00? Or will the customer pay $1,000.00 and we only receive $971.00?

Why would your customer pay your paypal fee?

I honestly just want an example of what happens. Is it the former or latter version of what I have listed above?
