Customer transaction lead times and why?

- How long does it takes for payments to go through? 

- Customer checkout and making payment until it appears on our balance?

- Why is it taking so long in "the days of Internet"?

Normally payments between paypal accounts are done in seconds but allow a couple of hours.

If I get this right:

Customer to Store account balance are instant? No delays, as with other methods like Stripe that has 7-10 days... 

Are Paypal holding on to the money in some way to ensure security etc?
