I am purchasing an item from Australia for $250 Australian. How do I pay this from my US account? Do I pay the exchange rate of $181?

You can get them to send you a money request or invoice in AUD and then before you submit payment it will tell you how much will be deducted from your funding source ie card or bank account in USD.
Or you just go and choose the correct option using the send money > put in the amount > select AUD from the drop down currency list and then again before you submit payment it will tell you how much will be deducted from your funding source ie card or bank account in USD.

Kudos / Solution appreciated.
