I'm asking on behalf of a client who allows users to pay for orders using the Paypal hosted payment piece (Paypal Payment Standard). Their issue is that they have orders where only a portion of the order can be shipped immediately and some subset of the order has to be backordered awaiting inventory. Is there a best practice for such a scenario? Can they authorize the full amount but only capture the smaller amount before going back and capturing the second subtotal off the original authorization? Or perhaps is it possible to create a second payment to auth/capture on the user's behalf without requiring them to log in? We're trying to avoid authorizing and capturing the full amount as it can create issues if that backorder can't be fulfilled.
