Trying (In vain) to test buy using a generated card number from

How would I test one of the card numbers? I have done this before (long time ago, so things have changed)
There HAS to be a way to test buy something using a test card no. as supplied by PayPal, any suggestions? Technical help are hopeless.
"Can you tell me the last 2 digits of the card?"
YES it's <removed> this time, it's NOT A REAL CARD!
"Who is the card issuer?"
PAYPAL it's NOT A REAL CARD
"???" Chat terminated Aaaaaargh
Suggestions on testing a purchase without invoking a big bill would be appreciated, suspect this needs to go into a sand box or similar, but can't find any info.
