One of the greatest benefits of working as a freelancer is the opportunity of bringing your work wherever you are in the world. During my recent trip to Hong Kong for a family event, I managed to squeeze in a little time to submit articles for my client by setting up a makeshift workdes by the bay window of my hotel room. This just proves that freelancers can do their job anytime, anywhere.

Here is my everyday space that keeps me productive.
A little plant to make me relax,
Spain flag that shows my dedicaton to the language and it's culture.
My books to feed my mind,
My Journal of everyday's lesson.
My cup of coffee,
and my not so clingy cat.
xoxo

Here's my Awesome Workstation that I wanted to share to all of you, I know it's simple and not too much but this corner in my house is so special. This is where I work hard and had sleepless nights just to earn for my family. I adore this place, everytime I sit here and do my job.. I feel like I'm the boss! 🙂
Because of this job and Paypal, I can be a full time mom in the morning and be a helpful customer service representative at night! 🙂

I never had the privilege like many to be able to afford a place that I could call my own and I still don't. Ever since I've moved out of my parents' home due to a lot of problems and disagreements with my family, I'm very used to life as a homeless person, but I never gave up. I was fortunate that despite my failed years as a teenager, I've equipped myself with good language skills of Mandarin and English and Bahasa Malaysia. At the time that I've decided to leave home and that I'd refuse help and I know my family would not in any way support my decision, it has driven me to life being a part-time translator. I started at Upwork (then called as Odesk) and have worked on very very low hourly pay to sustain myself living independently away from home, it was not easy... paying bills without a desirable academic qualification is some of the most difficult decision that one could ever imagine in our current society, but my hard work has paid off after working 15 hours per day for 6 days per week (sometimes, 7 days) bidding for jobs that the wage is so low that the others wouldn't be keen on, yes, I did just that to survive. I'm not much better off today, but at least I can afford to pay simple bills and for 30 USD/month for a really small twin-sharing room and yes, I can afford 2 basic meals per day now with my very little but honest money. My roommate is always at home, playing computer games, turning on his amplifier and sound systems and makes a lot of noise, I cannot stand it, but I have no choice because this is what I could only afford. How could I work and pay my own bills given such condition then? It's the daily mamak (Indian Muslim stores that open 24 hours per day) sessions that's kept this hope alive for me, I began spending around 12 hours per day in mamak, it's not usual for people to even spend more than 1 hour if they're merely having food there, maximum 3-4 hours. There is also no internet at home, and from time to time, I needed internet to work on my translations so finding this mamak that provides free WiFi use is absolutely perfect for me. That said, 12 hours at a mamak is really something new, and certainly something that I wouldn't imagine myseld doing during my younger days but I've made it work for now, it's been exactly a year since I've moved into my room and in this neighbourhood and I've found great comfort in this small, community-based mamak and have my favourite 'teh O' (Indian tea) everytime, sometimes up to 8 cups of them per day, to keep myself recharged and energised with some small snacks like roti canai. It's not the most comfortable way, but it's what I need to do to survive. It's ironic that I couldn't call my room home, but merely a place to sleep and I certainly couldn't consider it my work place, but it's precisely this mamak, this setting, my laptop and a cup of 'teh O' that has got me through all the long hours of translating there to be able to live on independently. This mamak, togehter with my laptop and always, without fail, a cup of 'teh O', is my work station to handle the joy of playing around with languages, carefully using words to produce the best possible level of accuracy in my translation work. It doesn't look pretty and interesting for sure, but it's real, and it's what's keeping me feeling alive, and kicking and one that I truly feel where home is. It may not look pretty, but to a young Freelancer, this means the future and the world to me, as soon as I keep doing this and hopefully find success in it. And thank you, PayPal for making it possible for me to be paid by my foreign clients to be transferred to my bank account via this your platform to help me live by myself independently.

This is my very special #FreelanceWorkstation. Why? because it is located next to my bed. As wire jewelry crafter, I often have to work on my handmade wire jewelry until late at night. So when already tired, I can go to sleep.
Sometimes I choose to sleep first and only wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning. So without wasting any time, I can immediately rolled over to my workstation .. :-))
On the right, there is a table and my laptop is on it (not visible in the picture), so I can directly upload the picture of my work.

Above is my clutter, and below is my story. 🙂
I used to be a classroom teacher, but because I got in to a law school I have always dreamed to study in, I had to stop my full-time work as a classroom educator and find a job that's less demanding, less stressful, and more flexible. What's great about my job as a Courseware Developer in an online English school is I get to balance work with my studies, I still get to teach and touch students' lives through the instructional materials I design, and I get to fund my education with the help of PayPal's secure and hassle-free services! The educator-slash-student-slash-lawyer-to-be in me is very, very happy!
