receiving a payment

I had an email stating I had received a payment of £182.50 but paypal showed £6 less than this, is this correct?

Yes because Paypal deduct their fee before the rest of the buyers payment is credited to your Paypal account balance.

Unlike Ebay (if it is an Ebay transaction) who invoice you on a monthly basis.

UK > UK fee is 3.4% + 20p per transaction.
