I am sending American money from a Canadian bank to an American recipient who says they are being charged $50USD for the transaction. How is this possible? I understand that I am charged a fee but why is the recipient being charged that fee?

Did you send money as goods and services or friends and family? Because goods and services payment type incurs PayPal fee for the recipient. Or, since you used a local USD bank account and not an actual US bank account to send the money, there could be some double conversion going on.

But here are the instances where fees are charged (Canada and US):

Each of you may have to call customer service for exactly why a fee was charged specifically:

To contact customer service for assistance (US):

Log on, click HELP on top menu, scroll down to click CONTACT US, and then scroll down to click CALL US or other contact options.

Call early, during business hours, west coast time to try to get a US rep.

Or contact via social media:

Twitter (US): @AskPayPal

To contact customer service for assistance (Canada):

Log on, click HELP on top menu, scroll down to click CONTACT US, and then scroll down to click CALL US or other contact options.

Or contact via social media:

We have tried both options...wondering if recipients account is strictly a business account. I am unable to contact PayPal by phone as the number to use outside of Canada doesn't seem to work here in Mexico. & recipient seems reluctant to make a call.
