Will buyer protection cover me for a purchase not on eBay?

I’m buying something from someone online. If he decides to scam me and ghost me after I send my money will buyer protection cover me? What do I need to get in writing before sending the money? Are messages online sufficient? It’s only through his username on Reddit but he did give me his first name. He seems like a really good dude, but I don’t trust anyone on the Internet really. It’s a $600 purchase so I need to know I’m covered.

That depends on MANY factors all listed in Paypals buyer protection policy for you to read so you can risk assess your transactions.
Legal (bottom right of Paypals pages) > user agreement > buyer protection.

Make sure you do NOT pay using the friends/family option.
Scammers are always good dudes until they have your money.

I had him send me a custom invoice with a description of the item. Is this sufficient?
