Why am I incurring fees on international transfer from Australia when it’s supposed to be free?

Hi I’m having trouble transferring money to a friend in Italy (I’m in Australia). even tho PayPal tells me it’s free to do this my friend is being charged a fee to receive it. I suspect I am being charged a fee too. What am I doing wrong to be incurring a fee? Thanks

Why would you think its free?
If you are funding it via funds in your balance or bank account (and not a card) then yes its free BUT if its an international transaction then cross border / currency conversion fees apply.
Advice is voluntary.
Kudos / Solution appreciated.
