When you pay for something using a bank account as the funding source, it would typically get processed as an e-check and it would have to transfer the funds from the bank to PayPal before it completed the payment, which takes 3 - 5 business days.
If you have a credit card added to your PayPal account, though, then it will process the payment as an "instant transfer" so that you don't have to wait for the payment to clear.
Instead, it will clear instantly, and then if the bank transfer fails for any reason they will hit the card you have on file to cover the transaction.
So that becomes an "instant transfer" allowing the buyer and seller to complete their transaction without waiting on an e-check to clear.
Hope that helps!
