Hi I have a watch for sale on gumtree and I’ve received a text saying they want to buy it. Problem is that they are 400 miles away and want to pay me by PayPal, they also want to mark the transfer as a gift to avoid PayPal charges? It’s a chunk of money so I’m wary, you hear a lot about scams so any advice would be welcome!

In order to receive Seller Protection, you need to show that the item was delivered with a tracking number. Seller Protection doesn't cover items picked up, or delivered locally.
You shouldn't use PayPal Friends & Family payments to help people avoid paying their fees, or to avoid your own fees.
Here is a PayPal link with details about selling through classified sites, and things to look out for.
