I want to but something privately but they want paying by friends and family will I be covered against loss or the item not showing up?

If you pay using the Friends and Family option - there's no buyer protection - the transaction simply looks like one person sending money to another person - you have no proof of a purchase.    The other party wants you to use this method so they don't have to pay any transaction processing fees but, doing so puts you in an uncomfortable position.
