Sending money to person - system changes payee's address between steps

When sending money, I type my payee's e-mail address into the recipient box.  The recipient is  a contact.  When I proceed to the next step, to enter the amount, the recipient has been changed to another e-mail address.  If I delete the contact, and simply type in the address, the system says it cannot complete the transaction.
