Someone sent me $500 and is telling me to withdraw it in cash and they'll give me directions on what to do with it then. How can I tell if the money that was deposited is free and clear? This sounds like a scam to me!
Its a scam, the money would come from someones paypal account and as soon as you withdrew the funds and passed them on the original owner of the account would file an 'unauthorised' dispute or 'chargeback' and you would be left with a minus amount on your paypal account to pay the money back again.
