I sold an item on gumtree and the guy paid me via my email address and PayPal, I received the money but minus a fee from PayPal , why is this I don’t think I have ever been charged for using PayPal before.

Sellers pay fees to receive paypal payments.
How do you think they fund the service and pay for their staff every month if they didn't charge?
They are not a charity.
Fees are in paypals user agreement for you to read up on.
