Buy on Ebay, pay via PP credit

I’m looking at buying an item on ebay from the US but I can’t pay using PP credit. I’m guessing this is because my account is in £ in the UK and the seller is in the US ($). If I ‘won’ the item and the seller sends me a PP invoice, is this secure? Would I have any protection if the seller decided to not post the item? I’ve never used invoices and have no idea if they offer protection like it would if I paid via PP through ebay.
