I can't cancel a sale at the buyers request.

A buyer recently won a bid on a small item ($0.99) and contacted me a day or so later and asked to cancel the deal before he made payment. It was OK with me but when I tried several times  to cancel it I received a message that there was an open case on the matter and I could not cancel. What do I do?
