Pass custom data to express checkout url?

Hello
Is it possible to pass custom data to the express checkout url and have it returned to me? My usecase is better explained below:
I am using the NVP API. I have my SetExpressCheckout working and can get a token back. But I'm not sure how to pass my custom variables to the Paypal express checkout page and get it returned to my checkout page after

Thank you for posting to the PayPal community.
You can try passing the “PAYMENTREQUEST_n_CUSTOM” in the SetExpressCheckout request.
