Money on hold

Hello I am so stressed. My husband runs a small carpentry company. Last week he completed a job and the lady wanted to pay by PayPal. We have never done this before. She made payment on Friday and the payment is on hold. It is for almost $8000. This is my husbands wages for two weeks. Material and subcontractors wages. We need that money now, how long do you usually have to wait. Friends of ours with similar businesses have never had this issue. How are PayPal allowed to do this? The invoice clearly stated work completed on your property.

Please read:

Since you're new to PayPal, please peruse PayPal help documentation as it is PayPal account owners manual so there would be no surprises:

https://www.paypal.com/selfhelp/home

Sellers/recipients do this to get money sooner (may not be available for some countries):

 1. Click Activity at the top of the page.

 2. Find and click the original payment for the item or service.

 3. Click Add Tracking Info.

 4. Select an Order Status.

Note: PayPal releases funds 24/48 hrs from delivery confirmation with courier by PayPal, if tracking info is provided in the transaction.

Then ask buyers/senders to “confirm receipt” to release funds (may not be available for some countries):

 1. Log on to PayPal account.

 2. Click Activity at the top of the page.

 3. Find and click the payment transaction.

 4. Click Confirm Receipt.

 5. Click Yes to confirm that you received the order.

***Not all transactions require receipt confirmation.

If buyer does not take action to confirm you may have to wait up to 21 days for PayPal to release the funds.

You can also contact customer service and ask them to manually confirm delivery and release funds. Please allow 24/48 hrs for request to process:

Log on, click HELP on top menu, scroll down to click CONTACT US, and then scroll down to click CALL US or other contact options.

Thank you for your reply I still do not understand how they can hold money on a service though. My customer has told PayPal she has received service, so hopefully money will be released soon.

New seller hold.

https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/funds-availability

HOWEVER If it was a service then try marking the item as shipped in the PayPal transaction details, and that should open up the capability for your buyer to go into the transaction details on their side, and acknowledge receipt of the service. That may allow the payment to be completed more quickly.
