Can someone please explain, why Paypal can send 1p almost immediately to my chosen account for confirmation, but spends hours or days transfering  my own money?

Because for transfering funds to or from a paypal account paypal normally use the slowest (because it the cheapest) transfer option.

That is why when you pay a seller paypal CREDIT them for you and paypal take the wait for the funds to transfer from your bank account or card.

Funds may leave your bank account from a few hours up to a few days post payment but that does not mean paypal have actually got them yet as they have to go via the slower automated clearing house.
