Losing out on unnecessary currency conversion

Hello everybody,
I hope somebody can help with this as I am a bit perplexed. I have a UK account and my primary currency is GBP.
I received 400 euros and wanted to send 200 of that on to somebody else. I double checked that my account could hold two currencies before receiving the money as I wanted everything to stay in EUR. When it came to making the transfer however, the app showed me the currency calculator for GBP. I sent 200 euros anyway (this was probably a mistake) and now only have a balance of 180 euros in my account.
Is this because for some reason PayPal converted the Euros to GBP and then back again?? It just means I lost 20 euros for nothing!
Is there a way to stop this happening?
Many thanks!

before you sent 200 euro, did you see a balance of 400 euro in your account?
there are fees sending money to other country, depending on which country and the amount sent, like 99 cents to 4.99 in USA.for friend and family
you may want to review fee in UK.
but 20 euros sound too high
