Why on Earth can't I log in to my account?

I'm getting the absurd 'Sorry, we couldn't confirm it's you' error message. This has hindered ALL my XMas Holiday payments on an account that is verified and I've had for over 10 years. What is happening here? I have not changed any logins or emails, I've simply put in my password incorrect once. Now I can't even update the account, nor get help, since you need to be logged in to contact support. PayPal is getting more moronic by the minute.
