I tried adding a new email on my account. I received the confirmation link and followed the instructions. But, when I entered the password, that same message appears. I tried multiple times but still isn't working

You can have up to 8 email addresses on the one paypal account and accept funds on any of them.
BUT you can normally only log into your main email address with the password for that email address.
So to change it you would need to make your new added email address your primary one instead by marking it as primary in your paypal account.
Advice is voluntary.
