Years ago, I bought one of the Paypal security key devices that looks like a small grey football; pressing a button on the device generates a six number code that allows me to check in. The battery is not going to last forever, and I'd like to get a new one, but apparently these devices are ancient history. Although I could set up 2 factor authentication through my phone, I'd rather not. Are there any viable alternatives?

Hi there,
Welcome to the PayPal Community.
2FA is the only option at this time or if you phone offers fingerprint/facial recognition security features this is also an option.
