How do I stop the confirmatory texts from PayPal (62226) that charge me to respond?

When I bought something using PayPal, I got a text from 62226 saying:
"[PayPal] Did you pay £{amount} GBP to {vendor} on {date}? Please reply 1 if yes or 2 if no?"
When I sent the response "1", my phone tells me that I will be charged for replying. While I understand that security is important, I would rather just use my debit card directly instead of having to pay an additional fee for PayPal to verify that I am the one who made that transaction.
Is there a way for PayPal to verify my transactions without me having to pay a text fee?

I only found out from my phone bill. Paypal should disclose they are using a premium text number for security confirmations. Very underhand in my opinion.
