Cannot confirm secondary email address

Good morning, 

I set up my account with an googlemail.com email address and later added my gmail.com email when this became available. 

 

This was years ago, but PayPal have never let me confirm the email address. The strange thing is, I can login with the gmail.com email address but it's still listed as unconfirmed. 

 

Now I have just received a payment to the gmail.com and a link to confirm my email address and accept the payment, but when I get to the screen (on my mobile), it says "login to accept payment" and then it takes a while to load and then just loads my account, without confirming the email/processing the payment. 

 

On the laptop it says "please try again later" and won't let me login at all. 

 

Is this a common issue and is there any way round it?
