Adding a card/bank account to PayPal

Whilst setting up my PayPal account it has requested I buy a card or link a bank account to my PayPal account.

1. Is it compulsory that I do either of these options?
2. If I skip adding a card/bank account may it limit how I can use PayPal? 
3. If I don't add a card/bank account will any money sent into my PayPal account be stored under this account or not?

I ensured to make sure that my account was verified before posting this. Since when I was setting up it requested I add a bank account/card I have to my PayPal account I assumed it may be that it might limit how I can use my account. If this is the case please tell me how. If not what will my account still be able to do?
