Each time I add an item to the basic PayPal shopping cart I am redirected from my own website to PayPal showing a webpage with the contents of the shopping cart. Is this expected behavior? I thought this functionality belonged to a button with the "display" tag added...
It sounds like you may be using a Buy Now button. When you click on a Buy Now button you will be directed to a PayPal shopping cart hosted page. If you would like your buyers to be able to add items to the cart and continue shopping you can you the Add to Cart button. I hope this helps.
