How I can make a difference between the "initial sale" and recurring_payments for a subscription?

I'm integrating the IPN and also the "import of PayPal transactions over API" and I'm having some issues.
1) I need to make a difference between the sales and rebills for a subscription.
So sale is the first payment that occurs but then rebills are all the future ones until cancelled.
I don't see a parameter that shows what payment it is... I can't count the subscr_signup as initial cause after that u have a new transaction
subscr_payment so that would be mean double counting.
2) When I do an API Import I don't get subscr_cancel transaction. I just get the subscr_signup (which is with changed status, but there isn't a date where it shows when it was cancelled). Any ideas how to handle this?
Thanks
